Biography
From about 1866 to 1883, John Cannon owned and operated the Cannon House hotel in Manassas.  In 1878 he received a business license in Manassas as a lumber agent, and within a few years was operating his own planing mill.  By the late-1880's and early 1890's, Cannon was working as a bridge builder.  In the 1897-98 business directory for Prince William County, Cannon is listed for the first time as being a carpenter and builder, which is presumably the same time he went into business with his son Ira.  For the next twenty years, the Cannon's were hired to build some of the most prominent buildings in Manassas.
